Our season begins November 1st and lasts until May 1st, perfect timing for our northern hemisphere friends to escape the cold of winter. Imagine unspoiled scenery, rivers teaming with brown and rainbow trout and nobody else around. Wake up to the stunning beauty of the ¨Thrown of the Clouds¨ and the River Futaleufu (mostly known as the
Rio Grande ) right outside your window. Let us make a hot cup of coffee for you to enjoy on the veranda while you casually watch for rising trout. Some of the best dry fly fishing is right outside our door.
As the name says, The Rio Grande is a very big river, often compared to The Missouri in
Montana . We have small motors on our boats, which give us the chance to find the best fishing at all times. Depending on the river and the weather conditions, your guide will take you to the best spot. You can fish this river for days and not fish the same water twice.
Patagonian trout are known as some of the wildest most acrobatic in the world, in this river the size ranges between 14 to 18 inches, but you will find that bigger ones are not uncommon. While you are fishing mostly for Rainbow and Brown trout, it is also common to catch native Perch and the occasional King Salmon closer to the end of the season.
We are proud to say that all of our professional guides are from and know
Patagonia as well as the waters they fish. Each guide is fluent in both English and Spanish and their added value will make your day on the river a wonderful, fun experience.
Patagoniaoffers every type of fly fishing you can imagine. From stripping streamers to stalking trout using a size 18 mayfly spinner you will see it all. Weather permitting you can find dry fly action through out the season. This all happens in the spectacular surroundings of the
Andes
Mountains . Within minutes of wetting your first line you will begin to appreciate the lack of other fishermen similar to what Montana and
Idaho might have been like decades ago. Depending on the length of your stay we can costume design your trip, a combination of fishing The National Park Los Alerces, our home river, Arroyo Pescado Spring Creek and maybe Chile or the Rio Pico area, will make you fishing adventure one of the best you have ever had.
Trust our experience, come live the adventure of a lifetime and see for yourself.
Equipment for Fishing
Patagonia
Remember that you are traveling to Central Patagonia and that equipment is very difficult to come by if you happen to forget something. Be sure to make a list and check twice. We always suggest bringing 2 rods.
is long way to go to not have a backup rod in case one breaks.5/6 weight rods, 8 ½’ to 9’ will work well.It is important to bring both a floating line and a sink tip line as conditions may require both at times.Check the list of suggested flies and bring a good assortment. Some flies will be available at the lodge. We try to do as much wade fishing as possible so waders and felt bottom wading boots are necessary. They are also handy for getting in and out of the boat.Be sure to bring spools of tippet from 1X - 6X, clippers, and pliers.
We are located at the foot of the
Andes which can make for some cool evenings.Bring some warm clothes to layer and light clothing (including shorts if you like) for sunny days. Also, bring a waterproof rain jacket (water resistant will not keep you dry) and finally, lots of sun screen, a hat, and polarized sun glasses. You will want to dress for both cool and warm weather.
